Some things have the power to bring people together without words.
Football is one of them.
While millions of people around the world follow the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA European Championship, the UEFA Champions League, and international matches, we at NGO "Young People for Haifa" decided to turn watching football into something more than just a sports broadcast.
That is how Common Ground was born—a community initiative that brings together young people, new immigrants, students, entrepreneurs, and local residents to watch matches together, meet new people, and build meaningful human connections.
The project takes place in the organization's community space and coworking hub, where people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds gather for every match. Some have only recently arrived in Israel, others have lived in Haifa for years, and some are simply looking for a place to meet new people.
Football is simply the reason to get together.
The real value is created between the opening and final whistle—in conversations, new friendships, professional connections, and the sense of belonging that naturally develops around a shared table.
🤝 A Community Built Through Shared Experiences
One of the greatest challenges facing young people in Haifa today is loneliness and the difficulty of building new social connections.
New immigrants often struggle to integrate into society.
Students arrive in the city knowing almost no one.
Many young professionals work remotely and are looking for a social environment where they can expand both their personal and professional networks.
Our match-viewing evenings create exactly that opportunity.
People come to watch a game and unexpectedly find themselves sitting next to an entrepreneur, a student, a designer, a software developer, a business owner, a new immigrant, or someone who has lived in the city their entire life. Very often, a casual conversation about football becomes the beginning of a friendship, a collaborative project, or an entirely new chapter in someone's life.
Sometimes all it takes is a single goal to start a conversation.
And sometimes one conversation grows into relationships that last for years.
🌍 A Place Where No One Has to Be Alone
For many new immigrants, the first months in Israel are both the most challenging and the loneliest.
There are no close friends yet.
No familiar social circle.
No family nearby.
Sometimes there isn't even someone to simply watch a match with.
Yet it is often in these simple moments that the strongest connections are formed.
We believe that integration begins with human connection.
Before finding a job.
Before starting a business.
Before navigating bureaucracy.
People come first.
That is exactly why Common Ground exists: to give everyone a place where they feel welcome, accepted, and part of a community.
🗣️ Learning Hebrew in a Natural Environment
For new immigrants, learning the language is one of the greatest challenges.
Practicing Hebrew outside the ulpan is not always easy—especially in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.
During our gatherings, participants have the opportunity to speak Hebrew, hear everyday conversations, and gradually become more confident as members of Israeli society.
No exams.
No grades.
No classrooms or desks.
Just people sitting together, talking, laughing, debating football, and getting to know one another.
Around a single table, you may hear Hebrew, Russian, English, and Ukrainian.
Haifa has always been a city where cultures meet, and Common Ground helps preserve that spirit while turning it into an everyday reality.
💼 Networking That Starts in the Stands
Many professional opportunities appear in the most unexpected places.
Our coworking and community space brings together young professionals, entrepreneurs, freelancers, business owners, students, and remote workers.
Match-viewing evenings allow people to connect in an informal setting, exchange ideas, discover new partners, and launch projects that continue long after the final whistle.
Sometimes the best business meeting begins with a debate over a controversial penalty.
🔄 Connections That Continue After the Final Whistle
One of the unique aspects of the project is that relationships do not end when the match does.
Many participants continue seeing one another after the event.
Some become members of the coworking community.
Some begin attending the organization's lectures and events.
Some become volunteers.
Some launch joint projects.
Others simply find new friends.
The match is only the beginning.
The community is what remains afterward.
🏙️ Strengthening Haifa's Community
Common Ground is part of the broader mission of NGO "Young People for Haifa": making Haifa a city where young people want to live, grow, and build their future.
Through simple and accessible community activities, we create a space that brings together diverse groups of people, encourages social participation, and strengthens people's sense of belonging to the city.
Instead of sitting alone at home in front of a screen, people meet, connect, and build a genuine community.
🌍 Much More Than the World Cup
The FIFA World Cup is only the starting point.
Our goal is to organize sports watch parties, community events, social gatherings, and networking activities throughout the entire year.
We believe that human connections are the foundation of every strong community.
Sport is a universal language that helps people meet, break down barriers, and discover common ground where none seemed to exist before.
💙 Because, in the End...
Not everyone will remember who won the final.
Not everyone will remember the score.
But people will always remember the friends they met along the way.
That is what we are trying to build.
Not just a viewing party.
Not just a big screen.
Not just a football match.
But a place where people meet, integrate, find their community, and build something meaningful together.
Because the most important match is not the one played on the field.
It is the one that takes place between the people sitting side by side in the stands.
Common Ground is a community project of NGO "Young People for Haifa", dedicated to bringing together young people, new immigrants, students, and local residents through social gatherings, sporting events, and opportunities for social and professional integration in Haifa.
